Alex Waterhouse-Hayward

Alex Waterhouse-Hayward, a magazine photographer in Vancouver since 1975, has always had a special delight in taking portraits not only of celebrities but of anybody else, from lawyers and politicians to business people and children. This interest in the portrait has come about by inspiration from the portrait photography of the 19th century British pioneer of the medium, Julia Margaret Cameron. Alex has been particularly influenced by Cameron’s technique with children. She always managed to photograph them as the little adults she considered them to be. She captured their inherent dignity. His approach to portraiture is to get close with his camera and to arrive at a rapport with his subject so that the resulting image is always a collaboration.
